Famine 2010

Famine Weekend 2010

B1 Video

B1 on Facebook

When: March 20 & 21
Where: Old South Church
What is the Famine?
The Famine is a time to fast and explore hunger and injustice in our community and the world. We will look to find a connection with our sisters
and brothers around the world.  The Famine includes fundraising that will support United Methodist work to empower the poor and eliminate injustice
in the United States and around the world through The Advance. The Advance is the designated giving arm of the United Methodist Church that
ensures 100 percent of each gift reaches its intended mission or ministry. See www.advancinghope.org for information on the missions and
ministries of The Advance. Famine Weekend “B1” is a call to action, grounded in mercy and justice, and in the tradition of United Methodist stemming
back to John Wesley, rooted in our call from God to B1
Is this different than the 30 Hour Famine Old South has done in previous years?
The 30 Hour Famine focused on hunger and raised funds for hunger relieving efforts by World Vision. B1 focuses on hunger and injustice while calling
us to action. We are called to reflect on these areas and make a personal commitment to them. Through B1 we learn about the work of the United
Methodist Church in the areas of hunger and injustice. Throughout our Famine Weekend we will look at making a connection beyond ourselves through
5 areas: love, justice, hope, service and joy. Our worship and activities will be based on Isaiah 58:6-9a.
Who can participate?
   Anyone can participate.
Youth grades 7 – 12 will stay overnight at the church and participate in Famine related activities including mission activity, games, worship and fun.
Families may participate at home by learning about hunger and injustice, fasting from food or other activity and doing an activity of outreach.
   Anyone may sponsor a participant.
What does it mean to fast?
Fasting is to stop an activity or use of something for a period of time. It may be food, TV, or electronic games. During this time, the participant
also spends time in    reflection and prayer. In the past, some families have fasted from food by taking turns over the weekend. Others have used
the famine as a family activity, learning and fasting together. Youth will fast beginning Saturday at 9AM. The fast will be broken on Sunday at noon
with a communion service in the Chapel followed by a meal.
What is the schedule for the Famine?
Famine participants will arrive at Old South and sign-in at 8AM and treated to a light breakfast. At 9AM there will be worship gathering in the Chapel.
Youth and those who wish to participate will go to Lazarus House from 10AM to 3PM. During the evening, youth will participate in famine related
activities and worship. Sunday, the youth will lead both worship services and share their experiences with the church family. Families who are fasting
are also welcome to help lead the services.
How do I get involved?
Check the “Youth & Family” bulletin board near the pastors’ offices. There will be participant packets, a sign-up sheet, permission slips and more.
